Come prepared to play 18 holes of golf start to finish. There is no turn or back nine at Lookout Mountain Golf Course. Once you start on hole number one you are launched to play continuous golf all the way to the 18th hole with no breaks in between. I stand corrected. There is a very nice pit-stop called the Owl's nest situated high in the mountain passage way that you wind through before you hit the back nine. They have sandwiches ready to go and other cooked to order goods like hotdogs and hamburgers but you better be way ahead of the group behind you if you want to enjoy one of those cooked treats. That half way point marks a different golf experience when you set up for the back nine on hole number 10. Hole number 10 is a dizzy, and by that I mean you tee off a top a mountain tee box looking out at beautiful Moon Valley estates with an intimidating fairway. It's a straight shot to the pin but if you draw or pull left you are in the desert and won't find you ball. It hard to judge where you think the ball will land from that high altitude, but it sure is fun. The course is great to play offering dips, bends, blind shots and some tee box shots that challenge you to drive the green or play it safe. The rewards are great but failure really hurts. None the less the course is always in good shape. Even when we played over the summer the fairway conditions and greens were consistent with what you would expect at a higher end course. Heck, they were kind enough to bring us some ice cold towels to cool off with. Now that's service.
Price:
A Little Pricey ($35-$80 depending on season and time of day). You can find some good deals online in our Golf Course Directory.
Course:
18 hole championship, par 72. Lots of good golf. Undulating levels, challenges and plenty of scenic views.
Condition:
When we played the course was in the dead heat of summer and it played very well. Sometimes you expect courses to literally dry up but not here.
Bonus:
The scenery and diversity.
Downside:
One really short part 3. The kind you can actually throw your golf ball onto the green. A pretty little hole but you kind of feel gipped with this little shorty especially if you are paying the higher price.
Amenities:
On-site restaurant. Expect resort pricing. The Owl's nest is a welcome halfway relief
Staff:
I did mention ice cool towel service during the intense summer heat. They know how to treat their guests even during off season.
