Viewpoint Golf Course

If you are looking to get away up north and experience golf without it costing too much or taking too much time then you might consider Canyon Mesa Country Club. The term "Country Club" might be a little deceiving if you are expecting a bourgeois affair. It is really a cute little course with potential looking for a little respect amongst the competition. Canyon Mesa does offer something that most golf courses do not especially in a resort location: Fast golf for less. If you don’t have 5 hours to spare during your trip this course will work well for you. You can get your fix and not have it make a dent in your wallet. If you are below a 15 handicap, this course might not satisfy your appetite. It is great for seniors, beginners, or golfers who need a quick fix and can sneak away for less than two hours for 9 holes and not be missed. I enjoyed playing with some beginners here. We were not rushed and had plenty of time to take some extra practice shots.  Hole number 9 is a pleasant reward offering a breathtaking backdrop of the red rocks… a clever way to leave a final impression.

Price:
$18-$25 for 9 or 18 holes. Golf Carts extra ($10-$15).

Course:
9 hole executive. Good for beginners and average players.

Condition:
Fair. A little spotty hear and there. Some holes better than others.

Bonus:
Views of Red Rocks, peaceful northern retreat.

Downside:
Not your typical country club golf experience. No food and beverage service.

Amenities:
None, really, just go out and play golf. Small, quaint pro shop.

Viewpoint Golf Course

The words “trailer park” combined with “golf course” might steer you in a different direction especially when you have an abundant choice of golf courses available to you any day of the week. I had no idea what to expect from Viewpoint. As a matter of fact I was invited to play with a group of friends celebrating a birthday so I didn’t choose this course. It chose me. I don’t mind travelling a little to play golf and for me the trip from the north Valley to east Mesa was an eye opening experience into a glimpse of a place called Viewpoint Golf Course and RV Resort.

Don’t get hung up on the RV portion of the name because this property and golf course felt more like a country club. To start, their are two courses to choose from: a full length 18 hole course and an executive 9 hole course. That day we played the full 18, but I hear that the 9 hole course is a great little course and has deals you can’t refuse. My friend boasted about playing with his eight year-old son and wife there plenty of times over the summer. Locals seem to love it and with no wonder why. The course is in excellent condition. Dotted with pine trees through out the entire course it would make more sense to call it Viewpines, but you do have beautiful views of the Superstition mountains. There is plenty of room for those wonderful recovery shots that I like to factor in during my game. The course is wide in the right spots and challenging enough throughout. The course is mostly flat but still interesting.

The clubhouse and on-site facilities are very well run. I met some wonderful ladies running the proshop and they were happy to chit chat about the property and explained a little about the RV park. True ambassadors! Attached to the proshop is a restaurant called Fat Willy’s Clubhouse. The restaurant here offers a sports bar ambiance and an outdoor patio with views of the signature 18th green and waterfall. They seem to have a nice operation and a steady flow of patrons that are golfers and non-golfers. Pay close attention to what I say next. I don’t know how often they offer this special but we played 18 holes with a steak, spud and sud combo that was...... $39.99 (on a Saturday). That might be the best kept secret in town. Go check out Viewpoint for yourself and tell us what your experience was like.

Price:
$50-$75 for 18 holes depending on season and time of day. $20-$25 for 9 hole executive course. Punch cards and memberships available too.

Course:
18 hole championship and 9 hole executive. Good for all level players

Condition:
Excellent condition. Wide fairways, well groomed. Pine trees come into play throughout.

Bonus:
Views of Superstition Mountains, Nice facilties on site. Feels like a country club.

Downside:
None that I could point out, exept for being too far from home.

Amenities:
On-site restaurant Fat Willy's. Sports bar atmosphere. Good place to watch a game or catch golf on tv.

Club West Golf Course

If you are in the South Mountain /Ahwatukee area Club West golf course is worth playing. The facilities are modern, well maintained and as picturesque as the golf course itself which winds through residential neighborhoods and desert. The signature hole is a par 3 elevated tee box nested 100 feet or so high. You will want to take a shot with your camera before or after your tee shot. The view is pretty spectacular.

Golf plays well for all levels although if you tend to not hit the ball straight and wind up off the fairway more than on, the recovery shots are not so friendly as you will most likely find your ball in a hard dirt desert area. If you are like me and you depend on that recovery shot to get you back into a par situation you might want to consider adjusting your shot. Don't expect to pop the ball up. Just hit it low and run it up the fairway.

The are several tee shots that are elevated and fun to hit from. Mother nature factors in as natural desert washes make you consider your next shot. When you are finished playing the clubhouse is a great place to relax, enjoy the views and talk about your round. Chances are there are some games on the big screen televisions inside to wind down before ending you experience.

Price:
$25-$70 depending on season and time of day. You can find some good deals online in our Golf Course Directory.

Course:
18 hole championship, scenic views. Goof for all level players

Condition:
The course seems to be in fair condition. Not super groomed and manicured, but this was during the hot season. Areas outside of the rough are hard dirt.

Bonus:
Beautiful vistas of South Mountain

Downside:
As I mentioned before, I rely on the extra help when I am not on the fairway. That hard dirt is not fun to hit off.

Amenities:
On-site restaurant. Good food at a decent price. Good place to watch a game or catch golf on tv.

Lookout Mountain Golf Course

Come prepared to play 18 holes of golf start to finish. There is no turn or back nine at Lookout Mountain Golf Course. Once you start on hole number one you are launched to play continuous golf all the way to the 18th hole with no breaks in between. I stand corrected. There is a very nice pit-stop called the Owl's nest situated high in the mountain passage way that you wind through before you hit the back nine. They have sandwiches ready to go and other cooked to order goods like hotdogs and hamburgers but you better be way ahead of the group behind you if you want to enjoy one of those cooked treats. That half way point marks a different golf experience when you set up for the back nine on hole number 10. Hole number 10 is a dizzy, and by that I mean you tee off a top a mountain tee box looking out at beautiful Moon Valley estates with an intimidating fairway. It's a straight shot to the pin but if you draw or pull left you are in the desert and won't find you ball. It hard to judge where you think the ball will land from that high altitude, but it sure is fun. The course is great to play offering dips, bends, blind shots and some tee box shots that challenge you to drive the green or play it safe. The rewards are great but failure really hurts. None the less the course is always in good shape. Even when we played over the summer the fairway conditions and greens were consistent with what you would expect at a higher end course. Heck, they were kind enough to bring us some ice cold towels to cool off with. Now that's service.

Price:
A Little Pricey ($35-$80 depending on season and time of day). You can find some good deals online in our Golf Course Directory.

Course:
18 hole championship, par 72. Lots of good golf. Undulating levels, challenges and plenty of scenic views.

Condition:
When we played the course was in the dead heat of summer and it played very well. Sometimes you expect courses to literally dry up but not here.

Bonus:
The scenery and diversity.

Downside:
One really short part 3. The kind you can actually throw your golf ball onto the green. A pretty little hole but you kind of feel gipped with this little shorty especially if you are paying the higher price.

Amenities:
On-site restaurant. Expect resort pricing. The Owl's nest is a welcome halfway relief

Staff:
I did mention ice cool towel service during the intense summer heat. They know how to treat their guests even during off season.

ken-mac

Don’t let first impressions fool you because when you first arrive at KMac you get thrown off by a couple of things. To start the parking lot is quite remote and separated from the clubhouse unless you are lucky enough to grab one of the few parking spaces right up front in the lot adjacent to the clubhouse. You can ride your cart back to your car to unload but you need to haul or drop off upon arrival. Second, you might soak in some of the outdated (1974 to be exact) decor both inside and outside the facilities and wonder is there anything modern about this place? Then you remind yourself, “hey, this is a muni-course” don’t set your expectation too high”. The tactic is not intentional: Set the expectation low upon arrival but hit them with a golfer’s delight right after. That seems to be the appropriate word ,“delight”, for this great little municipal course because once you tee off at hole number one you experience a golf game that makes you want realize this will be a course you will want to come back to.

Price:
Fair ($30 avg  peak season). Can be broken down to 9 or 18 holes.  Twlight rates will allow you to sneak in 18 holes if you are out by 2pm otherwise play till dark and it’s still a good deal.

Course:
18 hole championship, par 72. This is the real deal. You get a full game when you play here. You know how some Muni-courses have holes that you can throw the golf ball on the green? Not here. As a matter of fact one of their Par 3’s is about 215 yards.

Condition:
When we played the course was in great shape (about 3 weeks after over-seeding). The greens were pretty much flawless and the overall landscaping and manicuring were in great shape. There’s plenty of green carpet to hit from as long as you are on the fairway.

Bonus:
You are able to recover with your second shot if your tee shot goes foul on all of the long holes. I am sure many of you can relate to this.

Downside:
Power facility and powerlines are unsightly. Expect delays during peak season.

Amenities:
Like I mentioned, the facilities are a little outdated but who really cares? Judge Smails? Speaking of Caddyshack, the on-site sports grill, Caddyshack serves great food and suds. I had a custom omelet for lunch and it was delicious and filling. The ‘Shack is a good place for all three meals: breakfast, lunch and happy hour.

Staff:
Friendly staff, happy to chat and eager to hear about your best shots.
